Nestled in the heart of Machias, Washington, Machias Community Cemetery is a historic burial ground that reflects the rich heritage of the local area. Established in the late 1800s, the cemetery has served as the final resting place for generations of families, early settlers, and military veterans.
Our History
Machias Community Cemetery was originally founded by pioneers Horace and Matilda Andrus, who settled in the area in the 1880s. Recognizing the need for a local cemetery, they dedicated an acre of their homestead for community burials. The oldest marked grave dates back to 1893, and the cemetery was officially dedicated in 1902.
Horace J. Andrus, a Civil War veteran and former prisoner of war at Andersonville, was one of the cemetery’s most notable early burials. After his death in 1903, his son continued caring for the grounds. In the 1940s, the property was sold to Everett Stringer, who maintained it until 1982. That year, a group of local residents came together to preserve and maintain the cemetery, ensuring it remained a vital piece of community history.
